Walking around Puig Campana (“Volta de Puig Campana”)

IMGP3605

IMG_8202The circular route around “Puig Campana” offers a great day out with family and friends. The walk suits young and old and doesn’t contain any exposed or very difficult parts.

Start and finish of the walk is the “Font del Moli” in Finestrat.

Follow the main road uphill passed the parking area for 500m. Then after crossing the bridge you reach the official start of the walk. Follow the yellow and white signposts “PR-CV 289 / Coll de Pouet”. The stony path takes the walker uphill and it’s worth taking a look around to enjoy the views towards La Vila Joiosa, Alicante, the ridge “Els Castellets” which looks like a dragon’s back and the Sierra Aitana.

4 kilometres later you will come to a small hut. The so-called “RefugioIMG_8023” is not catered but should offer a shelter in case of challenging weather conditions. Although the hut seems to be quite shabby, it’s worthwhile to take a look at the variety of graffiti which decorates the “Refugio” and tell their own stories.

500 metres further you’ll reach the “Coll de Pouet” where we would suggest you have a decent rest. The “Coll de Pouet” is the meeting point for many walking trails of the area. The trails cross the prominent ridge which you can see on your way or lead to the villages of La Nucia and Polop.

But we’ll stay on the trail “PR-CV 289” in direction “Cima del Puig Campana” / “Font de la Solsida”. After a short walk uphill you’ve reached the highest and furthest north-easterly landmark of the whole walk with 930 metres.  At the “Font de la Solsida” the view opens up again towards the sea. You can enjoy the view towards the “Sierra de Bernia”, the “Sierra de Toix”, the “Peñon de Ifach” in the East and towards Altea, the “Sierra Gelada” and Benidorm in the South.

From the “Font de la Solsida” the path winds through burned tree stubs and drops down to a pine tree grove via stony terrain on the South face of the mountain. Especially on sunny days the shadows of the trees are very pleasant and invite the walker to have a short stop. The shady pine forest will guide you back to your start point an offers stunning views of the “Puig Campana”.IMG_8189

The total walk is about 11 kilometres long and you should plan for anything between 3 ½ and 5 hours for the whole tour.
